Jasmine's imaginary BFF
Mindy Kaling is my current number one girl crush. she's funny, cute, smart, looks like she'd appreciate how awesome the Vampire Diaries is, and wouldn't judge me for eating ice cream for breakfast. In my mind, we are destined to be best friends.
So I was of course extremely excited to learn that she has returned to the blogosphere with her fabulous new blog The Concerns of Mindy Kaling. I have spent most this afternoon reading her posts, and cyber-stalking every article she has written online. Don't judge me, it's a public holiday. What else am I going to do?
Do yourself a favour and read what Mindy has to say. In particular take a look at the excerpt from her soon-to-be-released book, Is everyone hanging out with me (and other concerns). (I have of course already pre-ordered my copy from Amazon). Here is one of my favourite parts:
"Being a guy is so easy. A little Kiehl’s, a little Bumble and Bumble, a peacoat, a pair of Chuck Taylors, and you’re hot."
So witty. So cool. So true! Mindy - call me so we can hang out, ok?
P.S. follow Mindy on twitter as well. You'll thank me. I promise.

from new york with love #1
Lesbians, Louboutins and ...Australian federal politics? Poppy looks to Aussie chick lit to soothe her homesick soul.
Ok, so in my last post - a pitiful six months ago - I used a review of some Aussie chick lit to announce my move to New York.
Well, I’m still in New York...and still on the Aussie chick lit!
Six months into my stay here and feeling more than a little homesick, I have just completed Jessica Rudd’s (yes daughter of K-Rudd) ‘Campaign Ruby’.
Campaign Ruby follows the story of Ruby Stanhope, an investment banker in London who is made redundant via a rather impersonal and uncaring email.
In the hung-over haze of the morning after, Ruby wakes to discover that the night before, under the influence of several bottles of Australian pinot noir, she purchased a ticket to Melbourne leaving the next day.

Luckily for Ruby, her Aunty Daphne and partner Deb own a beautiful house in the Yarra Valley where she is able to stay.
In another stroke of luck, on her first night in Australia Ruby meets the Chief of Staff for the Leader of the Opposition (the LOO!) for what feels like about 5 minutes before he offers her a position as a financial policy advisor.
I like to believe it’s not common place to offer key political advisory positions to backpacking Brits in the midst of career crisis...but I'm sure stranger things have happened.
What really makes this book interesting, is the plot centres around an election called when the prime minister is ousted by his female deputy, who becomes the country’s first female prime minister.
Hmmm...sound familiar? Well, the book was actually completed several months before K-Rudd’s political demise!
Campaign Ruby is your typical chick-lit fare - takes a good couple of hours to get through and there’s no surprises who the prince charming in disguise will turn out to be. But it that's what you want and expect. It provided me with some good laughs and plenty of much-needed Australian references.
In particular, this is a must read for anyone involved in political campaigns; public relations; the Australian public service; anyone from Canberra really; and fans of net-a-porter and shoes in general.

Violet misses the foreshore
Either I am getting old or I wasn’t drunk enough, but this year I didn’t enjoy foreshore as much. People seemed a little crazy and annoying and I kept seeing girls crying and couples fighting. Plus nearly seeing one guy’s privates when he pulled down his pants in the crowd at Tiesto was just not cool. I have been all four years and this year I nearly didn’t last the distance, but I held on thankfully, because I was rewarded by The Temper Trap at the end of the night. I think the location was just not the same. The best part about Foreshore is sitting on the hill, or dancing on the hill, as the sun goes down and the water sparkles behind the stage. I was disappointed. Take it back to the foreshore, where Foreshore is meant to be, and maybe I will go next year. At least it didn’t rain I suppose....

The christmas season begins for Jasmine
I've got a confession to make. Despite living in Canberra my whole life I've never been to the Christmas Barn in Bredbo. Heck, until about a week ago I didn't even know it existed!
That was all until this afternoon. Some friends and I gathered in the car, chucked the glee soundtracks on (this has become somewhat of a tradition for my friends and I. Group singalongs are mandatory), and headed down the Monaro Highway to the barn.
My friends had warned me of what to expect, and I really thought I was prepared. Sure, there would some christmas trees, decorations, and plenty of tinsel. Woah, that was just the beginning!!!
Your first clue into the craziness of the Christmas Barn comes when shopping baskets are offered out the front of the store. That is how much stuff people buy here - they can't even carry it all without the help of a basket. And then, stepping in the door I saw it all. Every kind of christmas decoration you can imagine (and plenty you never wanted to) are there. Like this princess giraffe...
...in case you can't quite make it out, this little baby is retailing for $99.95, reduced from $225. Bargain!!
This princess giraffe is only the beginning of what you can see at the barn. Thankfully aside from the more *ahem* unusual items such as above, you can definitely find some more traditional or modern christmas decorations. There is certainly something to suit everyone's taste.
...And speaking of taste, don't forget to give your tastebuds a little boost before the drive home by popping next door to the barn at the Pancake House! I recommend the Peach Melba crepes. Delicious!
So pack your friends in the car for an entertaining afternoon in Bredbo as soon as you can (best to get in early and avoid the crowds - it's only going to get busier the closer it gets to christmas!) and have a giggle at the weird and wonderful Christmas Barn.
-------------------
To help you get in the mood, here is my favourite track from the Glee christmas album - a duet between Kurt and Blaine - absolutely gorgeous!!
Merry Christmas!

Jasmine enjoys a quiet night in
Ok, so it's a little difficult to follow on from Poppy's MEGA announcement but I'll try.
Tonight I'm not slipping on a pair of heels and meeting the girls at a bar for a night of drinking, dancing and all together fabulous-ness. Instead Poppy, I am living vicariously through you and your no doubt fabulous Manhattan lifestyle while I wear stretchy pants and an oversized cardigan!
Yes, that's right. Tonight I am having a quiet Saturday night in at home. But don't worry folks, this ain't no pity party. On this miserable, cold, wet and windy Canberra night (umm, excuse me, didn't Winter finish last week??) I have chosen to have a night of takeaway pizza, a bottle of wine, some movies, and best of all, the company of the delightful Kensington.
On this paricularly miserable night Kensington and I have chosen Crust in Braddon for our main meal, followed by a hideous sounding (yet inevitable guilty pleasure) straight-to-TV release Hilary Duff movie. It's bound to be amazing!!
Stay warm girls (however you can)... Spring is sure to come soon enough! (and if it doesn't, I recommend setting in with either Vampire Diaries season 1, or Gossip Girl season 3. They're next on my list for a quiet Saturday night!

special announcement #3
Poppy likes them apples...
Manhattan dreaming tracks the adventures of Lauren, a curator at the National Aboriginal Gallery in Canberra, who is offered a one year fellowship at the Smithsonian in New York.
After breaking up with her bad boy footballer boyfriend (one of the Canberra Cockatoos!) she decides to take the job in New York...launching her from Manuka to Manhattan...just as the cover promises!
Ok so this isn’t War and Peace and within the first two chapters you will be able to guess the entire story. But hey it’s fun and quick and easy to read when you’re in the mood for a little light entertainment. And for Canberra readers it’s also fun to see references to Tongue & Groove, the Bus Depot Markets and other Canberra institutions!
This, however, is not my special announcement.
I bring this up is because little did I know back then that just a few months later I would find myself in Lauren’s shoes...no I’m not in love with a Canberra footballer...I’ve moved to New York!
Rest assured I will still be around as your WNTMM New York correspondent with tales of fun and folly from the big apple!

things to do on weekends #14
Lily's top five
In my quest to find the perfect wedding venue, I have researched and visited what feels like every semi decent venue in the Canberra region! In no particular order, here's 5 places I highly recommend heading too, some near and some a little further...
Poachers Pantry
I've already raved about Poachers Pantry, but when I first visited Poachers, I couldn't help but imagine one day having my wedding there. It is simply beautiful - the food, wine and atmosphere. Poachers is like heaven on Earth. If I had to pick my last supper, it would likely be the mixed platter.
So when it came to venue shopping, it was definitely up there. My man loved it as well, a definite plus! (Can I also mention the duck salad is devine.)
Pialligo Estate Winery
This is a small winery, located far enough from the heart of the city that it's private but close enough to view the beauty that is Canberra. Situated at the airport end of the lake, the cafe over looks Parliament House, Telstra Tower, the Carillon and Captain Cook Fountain in the distance. The food was stunning, with a seasonal menu that changes week to week. My taste buds thoroughly enjoyed the bubbly and Shiraz, although there are other wines to choose from if these are not to your liking. Do get out there for some breakfast or lunch overlooking the vineyard, pond and view of Canberra. Or simply pop out and try some lovely Canberran cool-climate wines!
PODfood
For the uninitiated, Pialligo is the country town in Canberra. It's full of nurseries, galleries and the cutest cafes. Just before you hit Pialligo Estate, located in the hustle and bustle that is Pialligo on a weekend, is a 1930's cottage - home to PODfood. The cottage and grounds are just gorgeous and the food, well if it wasn't great it wouldn't be on this list! There is a big deck that catches the warmth of the sun on a clear winters day. It's most certainly a well-kept Canberra secret. Now... the secret is out!
Grazing
Ever wondered why anyone would travel to Gundaroo? Ever wondered where on Earth Gundaroo is? Did you even know there was such a place? About a 40min drive from most places in Canberra, off the Federal Highway and down a windy road is a teeny town about two blocks long. Here lies Grazing, a rustic 1865 building housing a restuarant which serves food made with the freshest ingredients possible - (most of it) straight from their gardens! They also have an extensive wine list, full of wines from the region - let me tell you there are some fantastic wines on that list. Nick O'Leary Shiraz is a recent favourite of mine.
Lerida Winery
One of the best views over Lake George, is at the Lerida Winery. The vineyards grow up the hill to the cafe. The cafe has huge glass windows over looking the vines and Lake George. While we didn't eat here, we did rack up quite the bill after wine tasting and buying a lot of their fantastic whites and reds.
There you have it, five places I fully recommend you visit the next time you feel like something a little different...

Special announcement #2
Lily's back!
I've been a little AWOL lately, ok a lot AWOL. The cause of this began with a trip away, and a very important question being, well, popped.
Yes you heard correct, I'm engaged! And I couldn't be happier about it.
My fairytalesque romance has well and truly blossomed into what can only be described by me as 'life changing'. I guess this is what they mean by 'when you know, you know'.
Since the question was asked, and of course agreed to, I've been researching, not researching, planning, not planning... I've become somewhat knowledgable on diamonds, purchased a bridal magazine (one!), attended my first (and hopefully last) wedding expo and visited numerous potential locations in the last few months with the hope of finding the one place that just fits.
I think we may have found that place, last weekend. At least we're a lot closer! I'm not sure I'm quite ready to disclose said location, however I will let you in on some of the fabulous places I have visited in my quest for a wedding venue. Most are a little off the beaten track in terms of Canberra weddings, so I hope I can give some inspiration for you next girly catch up, date or family outing. Stay tuned...

one girl's trash could be jasmine's treasure!
I'm sure, like me you're all busy looking into the mid year sales on the at moment. (I think the girls at veronika maine and mimco are starting to recognise me. oh dear!)
...and sure. those marcs boots i bought last weekend are INCREDIBLY fabulous, my credit card might not entirely agree on how much of a bargain they were...
which is why something like fash-n-treasure sounds like such a great idea!! with vintage fashion dealers, designers and local girls selling their very own fashion treasures, its just the kind of fabulous injection that our wardrobes need to us through the winter months in Canberra.
Happy shopping! I'll see you all at the Old Bus Depot building in Kingston on 17 July.

Violet has another favourite meal
For a girl that loves food, afternoon tea is that extra meal between lunch and dinner that maximises eating possibilities for the day. But when you dine out for high tea its more like three meals in one. I had an awesome high tea experience recently at the QVB in Sydney. The Tea Room there offer the classic setting and the Royal Doulton tea pots and china add to the experience. High tea is probably the only time you will have an earl grey and a champagne at the same time, that is my kind of afternoon! More cakes than you can eat and little sandwiches with traditional fillings, and scones of course. This makes for a great afternoon with the girls. And you can try it in Canberra at the Hyatt or for something different try the Mad Hatter’s Tea Party at Du Jour in New Acton which is on occasionally.

Violet just wants to shop
You know what really grinds my gears, Friday night shopping in Canberra. Don’t they know that Thursday is the designated late night shopping day. Thursday is the perfect day, the day before the weekend starts, a nice outing in the evening to grab all the necessary items, new outfits and gossip before the weekend starts. Who wants to go shopping on a Friday night, Friday night is for relaxing and having a few glasses, not for navigating the roudy youths at the shopping centre. The weekend starts on Friday at 5pm, or lunch time for some not so committed public servants. No one wants to be shopping for the weekend on the weekend, Thursday night shopping is the only option.

My thoughts for you #1
Violet likes nothing better than an otter...
Look, I am not really into Youtube and all that, I dont spend hours at a time clicking through clip after clip, unless its numerous clips of people performing Beyonce's 'Single ladies' at varying commitment and skill. But I really need to share with you two of my most favourite of favourite Youtube clips.
I am sure that you will enjoy these too.
The first is great, nothing funnier or cuter than a wet cat. And can you hear her little meow hehe.
The second is better though. I already had a passion for sea otters, but I have never seen something as amazing. This would get me smiling on the very worst of days :)

Violet's realisation
Oh Canberra, no sooner is autumn upon us than you bring in the cold weather. This is really the time of year that a girl wonders why she moved here. Not saying I don’t appreciate you and the wonderful things that winter brings, but it just comes on so soon. Summer was here for a brief moment and now it’s gone again. Time to get my coat out of the top of the cupboard and have the heater at the ready. Time to psyche myself up for the latest knit dresses and cute little hats. Time to catch up with my old friend red wine. Make it a brief and not so bitter winter, thank you Canberra.
